It’s important to note that everyone involved in the daily operations here at Saving Cities takes on the title of Rust Belt Revivalist. Though we all bring different strengths to the table, we are unified in our vision and mission, and our shared title is meant to be a representation of that unity.
Jack grew up in and around the entertainment industry and later fell in love with cities and urban renewal efforts as a result of his travels as a touring musician. He originally developed Saving Cities as a small idea bank for his hometown of Cleveland; the idea was to simply encourage and raise support for specific organizations and causes. However, through hundreds of conversations with amazing revivalists all over the Rust Belt, the idea has growninto what is today: a movement of small movements, aimed at creating lasting change in local communities throughout the region. He spends a majority of his time speaking and listening to other passionate city-lovers, while developing our projects and programs. Some of Jack’s favorite things are his family and friends, a neat glass of Gentleman Jack, reading about all things Kennedy, and obsessing over LOST (yes, even though it’s been over for quite some time now).
Rick was raised with an affinity for the smell of steel. It was the cologne his father wore on his clothes everyday upon his return from work at American Steel Foundry in Alliance, Ohio. As a youngster his father showed him the the value of sweating your heart and soul into your job and community while his mother was one of the first women in management at Firestone Tire and Rubber and an activist during the civil rights movement. During his 7 years in the United States Army Infantry and multiple combat tours Rick began taking a special interest in communities in the countries he was in. Upon returning from Afghanistan in March of 2010 Rick decided he should take his knowledge he learned abroad and apply it to his own home. Rick orchestrated a meeting with some of his friends in May of that same year. Since then he has been heavily active in Cleveland, Ohio having thousands of conversations about the Rust Belt, in between drinks of Bookers Small Batch Bourbon on the rocks of course. Rick loves his guitar and wrestling with his Black Lab named after Hank Williams.
While we have a small force working on the daily operations, we would be nowhere without the aid of these amazing people who have been supportive and instrumental in the development of this organization, its mission, and more. They are the true lifeblood of Saving Cities, and we couldn’t love them more.
